Neopets Halloween 2013 Customization Ideas!

Creating a Creepy Pet!
Intro-Basically, I will attempt to explain to you how to create a creepy pet, giving tips for everything from the name to the customization! Shall we begin?

Name-
This is one of the least important aspects of creating that creepy mood, but it is the first thing that you are prompted to do when creating a pet so I thought I'd put it first. The easiest way to give a name a creepy feel is to have a "hiss" sound in there. This is usually created with the letter "s". Something like Slytherin is a lot more eerie sounding than something like River. More variations of the "hiss" sound can be created using "th" (wrath), another method of "th" (thresh), etc. Experiment, see what works!

Color/Species-This is where your options spread out a little. You can ultimately choose any color depending on customization but for simplicity's sake, we'll focus on Ghost, Halloween, Transparent, and Zombie. Here I'll list my personal favorites of the colors...

These are the pets that, in my opinion, are able to best set the creepy setting. I recommend using one of these but if you have a neat idea with a different pet, all power to you!

Customization-
Customization. Undoubtedly the most important part of creating a creepy pet. Here I will list spectacular items for setting that creepy feeling! If you want to see what they look like before purchasing them, use Dress To Impress to try them on!

Neopoint:

Underwater Shipwreck Background-
An unlikely choice, but for the water dwelling pet, this is as creepy as you'll get. Combined with a Rolling Fog, you can turn this underwater scene into the eerie depths of the ocean!

Sophies Hut Background-
Just like the witch herself, the inside of Sophie's Hut can give quite the fright! Perfect for any witch-themed pets!

Nox Mansion Background-
Ah... the evil mansion of Nox. Whether you're an eerie zombie butler or just one of his frightening friends, this background will not dissapoint!

Dark Cave Background-
Whether your pet is a vampire, a werewolf, or any other variation, this dimly lit cave is sure to provide just the level of creepiness you'll need!

Malicious Dark Faeries Background-
Even the trees look scary in this one! Perfect for any forest-dwelling pet!

Creepy Darigan Citadel Background-
Although expensive, this background is sure to satisfy! With just the right amount of light, this background will add the perfect touch to any darigan minion!

Nighttime in Brightvale Background-
I don't know about Brightvale but if it's anything like New York, it's mighty scary at night! Whether your pet is an armed robber or just a simple Neopian walking through the eerie streets, this background will provide just what you need!

Entrance to Haunted Woods Background-
No explanation needed... just look at it! Dark, foggy, in a forest... what else do you need?

Bone Vault Background-
Often overlooked due to it's more abstract appearence, this background can prove to be quite eerie when used with an item such as Rolling Fog! Perfect for any skeleton.

Haunted Trees Background-
Forest... fog... dark... Perfect for any scare!

Blazingly Hot Soup Background-
Have YOU ever been the victim of a soup burn? Well, neither have I, but I'm sure it hurts so this can go here anyways. Add a Rolling Fog and you're set to go!

Cover of Darkness Foreground-
The Neopoint alternative of Rolling Fog, this item is perfect for dimming the light and adding a "foggier" setting to any background!

Hubrid Nox Mustache-
Har Har! Now you can look like the evil nox himself!

Giant Moach Costume-
This costume is absolutely fantastic! Put it in any location to instantly make your pet look like a freak!

Looming Balthazar Shadow-
Perfect for any forest-themed scene! What's creepier than a looming shadow?

Neocash:

A Rolling Fog-
The BEST item for creating a creepy pet. Shove it on ANYTHING and it'll make it look scary as hell. Always use it unless you have something else taking up the foreground space.

Haunted Graveyard Background-
Another creepy graveyard background... I like the np ones better personally but this will work too.

Haunted Manor Background-
A great outdoor background with just the right amount of lighting to create that creepy feel.

Scary Black Clouds-
Great for any outdoor background! Lightning, Black Clouds... all you need to make a creepy scene even creepier.

Closing-Overall, anybody can create the perfect "creepy" customization with a bit of help. I hope that this guide helped you to do that! If you have any suggestions/corrections, please post. Thank you :D

Guide to Customizing your Neopets on a Budget!

Customization on a Budget
Tips, Tricks, Items and Pics to make the most out of your Neopoint
Ahh... Customization. The word can make neo-veterans sick or NC mall fanatics cheer. But whether you refuse the dress up your pets or have all the latest NC mall outfits, the importance of customizing your pets is often underestimated. With the implementation of the NC mall, pet re-draws and continuous new wearables, customization is becoming an aspect of Neopets you can't ignore. Its priority with most users is already comparable to avatar collecting, trophies, earning neopoints, and so on... So when you stumble across an account with four teary-eyed and naked (or poorly dressed) pets, it significantly lowers the account's credibility and appeal.
...But by adding some cheap and well-though-out items to your pets, you can increase an account's credibility and appeal; potentially making a ABing shell appear more legit, reviving higher offers on pets/accounts for sale (Things that are more aesthetically pleasing can sell faster and even for more than they could have initially), and the list goes on.

BASICS
BACKGROUNDS: Backgrounds are the most important aspect of NP customization because, unlike the majority of other items, they are not overwhelmingly hideous. Backgrounds also fill the majority of the customization space, and a nice background can make a world of difference. When choosing a background, avoid patterned backgrounds and backgrounds that won't "fit" with other aspects well. Seek out a fair amount of detail, dark shades, rich colors, and low contrast.

CLOTHS AND ACCESSORIES: Unlike the previous two, neopoint accessories DO NOT look great with abundant detail. When choosing these items, be sure to stick to a theme and keep an eye out for bold, simple, and clean items.
Also, there are many pet-specific clothes and accessories that look great and are often very inexpensive. Customizing a certain species? Search it! (See item database link below)
SOME SIMPLE IDEAS
COLOR
Customizing by color or tone are great ways to keep your pets simple yet aesthetically pleasing--Unfortunately, this is the cheapest and quickest method and it shows. There are not many bold and bright single color items of one color, so to maintain the full effect, I suggest that if you do one pet on the account using this method, remain consistent and do ALL your pets the same way.
In addition to the examples, colors can also be used is more than one shade or tone. Two other nice methods to use are using clothing items to contrast a rare pet's color, or try combinations of 2 other colors.

THEME
Theme-based customizations are often faster to create, cheaper, and more professional-looking than color based pets. Simply choose a theme (in my case, I chose snow and farmer) and scroll through the item database, keeping an eye out for items that may enhance your pet's customization

PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS

Lastly, remember to play to your strengths! When choosing a customization theme or color, think about what would enhance your pet. For example; the ashia above was customized with light blue tones, creating contrast with the ashia's dark blue tones, but still complementing the color.
Every account comes with a FREE NC gift from the NC mall. (simply go to the NC mall front page to claim it) The chances of you receiving a background are fairly high, and NC background quality trumps neopoint backgrounds' tenfold. If you can, use your NC items.

HELPFUL TOOLS

Dress to Impress is a great website to plan customization! Basically it acts like the normal neopets closet, but it's filled with every wearable item and pet; allowing you to create a flash preview of your idea! Jellyneo's Item Database is truly amazing: Looking for a cheap clothing item? Click the link below! Its filter will display all wearable non-NC items sorted by price! Looking for a specific color/species/item type? Just enter the phrase into the search box on the left! The parameters I set up will automatically be reintegrated into the search. (example: if you search 'background', it will show you all wearable non-NC items sorted by price with the word background in them.)
